On-Bike Session for the League Of American Bicyclists Smart Cycling Course

The League of American Bicyclists’ Smart Cycling Course

The League’s Smart Cycling course provides tips and techniques to help you get all the benefits of cycling and stay safe while you’re doing it.  Whether you are just starting, are returning to the bike after years away, or are an experienced rider, you will find information and advice in the program that will make riding easier, safer, and more comfortable and enjoyable.

What is it?

The 9 hour course is based on bicycling techniques and principles developed by experienced cyclists, educators, and safety experts, and is taught by League of American Bicyclists Certified Instructors. (LCIs).  There are three sessions.

Session 1 is in class and covers most of the basic things a rider needs to know to choose the right bike, adjust it to fit, do basic maintenance, know the basics of bike handling and rules of the road as they pertain to bicycles.

Session 2 is also in class and covers additional principles of safe road riding, avoiding hazards, riding in bad weather, and special situations like rural riding, riding in groups, riding long distances, and touring.

Session 3, the On-Bike session, covers basic handling skills, emergency maneuvers, and a practice road ride.

Sessions 1 and 2 can be taken either in a classroom with an instructor or on-line at your convenience.   The first two parts or the online session must be completed before taking the on-bike session.  If you wish to take the online session rather than the classroom sessions, contact the instructor, Larry Mysz, by email to Larry@chicagobicycle.org or phone to 708 754 7859 for instructions.

When is it?

The classroom sessions are in Orland Park, May 10 and May 17 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at:

Life Time Fitness, 16333 South La Grange Road, Orland Park, IL 60467.

The on-bike session is in Homewood, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 19 at the St Joseph Church parking lot, right next to the Homewood Library.  17951 Dixie Highway, Homewood, IL 60430.  The rain date for the on-bike session is May 26.

What does it cost?

The 3 classroom sessions (or on line session) plus the on-bike session are being offered to Folks on Spokes Bicycle Club members at the special rate of $25.   For those not currently members of Folks on Spokes, the $25 fee includes club membership for the remainder of 2018.  That is deeply discounted from the normal charge for the course of $125.

The $25 course fee will be collected at the first session you attend
